Visa Issuance Terms

The timeframes for issuing a Schengen visa are governed by Article 23 of the Visa Code , which provides a standard term of 15 days , extendable up to 45 days in specific cases.

for National entry visits , the times are regulated by the art. . 5, paragraph 8 of the Presidential Decree of 31 August 1999, n. 394 , modified by Presidential Decree 334/2004 . The diplomatic-consular representation, once it has verified the admissibility of the application and carried out the necessary checks, including security checks, issues the visa within:

  • 90 days from the application for most visa categories;
  • 30 days for employment visas included in the quotas of Flow Decree 2023-2025 ;
  • 30 days for family reunification;
  • 120 days for self-employment.

In accordance with the Articles 6, paragraphs 2 and 3 of the Ministerial Decree of 3 March 1997, n. 171 , the release times may be subject to extension if further investigations, checks or the acquisition of documents and information by foreign authorities are necessary.

Counterfeiting of documents and revocation of visa

The use of counterfeit documents by foreign citizens to obtain an entry visa will always result in a report to the Italian Judicial Authorities (art. 331 of the CPP). The report will be made by the diplomatic-consular representation, both in the case of falsified documentation of Italian origin, and for foreign documents used to support the visa application ( art. 5, paragraph 8-bis of Legislative Decree 286/1998 ).

If, after the visa has been issued, elements or circumstances emerge that should have prevented the granting of the visa, the diplomatic-consular representation will proceed with the formal revocation of the visa itself.
