Types of Visa for Italy and Duration
According to the Visa Code (EC Regulation No. 810/2009 of 13 July 2009, entered into force on 5 April 2010 and subsequently amended by Regulation (EU) 2019/1155 of 20 June 2019), visas for Italy are divided into the following categories:
- Airport Transit Visa (Type A) This visa is intended for travellers who need to transit through the international areas of airports located in the territories of the Member States of the European Union. It does not allow the holder to enter the Schengen area and is issued exclusively for airport transit.
- Uniform Schengen Visa (VSU) – (type C) The Uniform Schengen Visa is valid for short-term stays within the Schengen Area, with a maximum duration of 90 days every 180 days, calculated from the date of first entry. The visa can be issued for one, two or more entries. Under certain conditions, visas with extended validity can be granted:
- C1: valid for one year;
- C2: valid for two years;
- C3: valid for three years;
- C5: valid for five years.
- Visa with Limited Territorial Validity (VTL) This visa is valid only for the Schengen State that issued it or, in special cases, for specific Schengen States indicated on the visa itself. It does not allow access to other Schengen countries, not even for transit. This is an exception to the common VSU regime, granted only for humanitarian reasons, national interest or international obligations. It cannot be requested directly by the foreign citizen, but can be issued by the diplomatic or consular representation in particular cases, such as in the presence of travel documents not recognized as valid, situations of urgency or necessity.
- Long-stay or “National” Visa (VN) – (type D) This visa is intended for stays longer than 90 days and is valid for the territory of the Schengen State that issued it. It may include one or more entries into the country of destination. Holders of a D visa can travel freely in Schengen countries other than the one that issued the visa, for a maximum of 90 days per semester, provided that the visa is still valid.
These provisions ensure effective control of the entry and stay of foreigners in the Schengen area, balancing security needs and international mobility.

Entry into Italy for Non-EU Citizens
Italy, member of the Schengen System Since 27 October 1997, it has been part of the common area of free movement. This system eliminates border controls between member states, but regulates entry for citizens of countries outside the Schengen area.
Citizens coming from countries outside the Schengen area must be in possession of:
