Unlike in the past, family members who move for family reunification are no longer issued a Schengen visa for tourism or family visits, but a national visa type D valid for 365 days.

This visa allows the holder to enter Italy and subsequently apply for a residence permit for family reasons.

Who can apply for this visa?

The national visa for family reasons can be requested exclusively by family members defined in Article 2 of Legislative Decree 30/2007, who are:

  • The spouse;
  • The partner with whom a civil union registered in an EU Member State has been contracted (provided that such union is equivalent to marriage in Italy);
  • Children or direct descendants, under the age of 21 or in any case dependent, and those of the spouse or partner;
  • Dependent parents or direct ascendants, and those of the spouse or partner.
