2 - How do you apply for family reunification?

The person you want to reunite in Italy must be abroad.

You must request the Nullaosta by filling out an online form, through the Prefecture, directly at the Immigration Single Desk of your country of residence, but the procedure is only online and can only be accessed via SPID at this WEB address.


3 - How long does it take to get clearance? 

90 days is the maximum time but it often arrives sooner.


4 - What documents do you need to present to obtain the Nullaosta? 

If you are an employee and live in a rented house:

  1. in case of activity undertaken for more than one year: latest tax return, or, latest CUD or UNICO form; in case of activity undertaken for less than one year, all pay slips must be attached;
  2. employment contract/letter of employment (Unilav);
  3. last three pay slips (optional if all pay slips have been attached);
  4. self-certification from the employer, drawn up on the “S3” form dated no more than 1 month earlier, which shows the current employment relationship and the monthly salary paid;
  5. identity document of the employer, duly signed by the latter;
  6. rental contract which must be for a period of not less than six months starting from the date of submission of the application with registration and/or renewal receipt;
  7. certificate of suitability for housing issued by the Municipality for the purpose of family reunification or a copy of the receipt for the request for the certificate indicating the RIA code;
  8. declaration drawn up by the owner/s of the apartment on form “S2”, certifying the consent to also host relatives;
  9. identity document of the owner/s of the accommodation, duly signed by the same;

5 - When I get the Nullaosta what do I have to do? 

Once you have obtained the Nullaosta you must send it to your relative who is abroad and he must go to the Italian Embassy and request the Visa to enter Italy for family reasons.

6 - Procedure for obtaining a visa for Italy 

The necessary documents to be delivered at the appointment are:

  1. invitation letter/accommodation declaration where the friend from Italy declares to host at his home or even called Invitation letter for foreigners for tourist visa application or also Guarantee declaration and/or Accommodation – PROOF OF SPONSORSHIP AND/OR PRIVATE ACCOMMODATION.   2. Travel Health Insurance Policy, Visa Schengen Travel Insurance, is used to guarantee the payment of any medical expenses for health problems that may arise during the period in which you are in Italy for an insured amount of €30.000,00;
  3. recent passport-sized photograph;
  4. travel document, passport, valid with an expiry date of at least three months after the date of the requested visa;
  5. return travel ticket (or reservation), or demonstration of the availability of personal means of transport;
  6. demonstration of possession of economic means of subsistence, to the extent provided for by the Directive of the Ministry of the Interior of 1.3.2000, the economic means can be demonstrated through Bank Guarantee to guarantee the means of subsistence for the entire period that the foreign citizen remains in Italy, for a maximum amount of 3.905 euros (90 days);
  7. supporting documentation of one's socio-professional condition (that of the foreign citizen who wants to come to Italy);
  8. availability of accommodation (hotel reservation, declaration of hospitality by the host, declaration of assumption of accommodation costs by the host).

7 - As soon as your relative enters Italy, what do you have to do?

Complete Guide to Family Reunification Visa in Italy

Il family reunification visa allows foreign citizens regularly residing in Italy to have their family members come to the country. This right is regulated by Consolidated Law on Immigration (Legislative Decree 286/98, articles 28, 29 and 29-bis) and provides for a two-phase procedure: the request for no objection to family reunification and the release of the entry visa at the Italian Embassy or Consulate in the family member's country of origin.


Who Can Apply for Family Reunification?

They can request the family reunification foreign citizens in possession of one of the following residence permits with a duration of at least one year:

Procedure for Obtaining a Family Reunification Visa

1. Request for No Objection to Family Reunification

The first phase of the procedure involves the request for the clearance at the Single Desk for Immigration (SUI) of the Prefecture of your city of residence. The application is submitted online on Ministry of the Interior portal:

Necessary requirements:

  1. Valid residence permit
  2. Reddito minimum richiesto, based on the number of family members to be reunited:
    • 1 family member: €10.420,99
    • 2 family members: €13.849,65
    • 3 family members: €17.323,31
    • 4 family members: €20.841,97
    • 5 family members: €22.898,76 and so on
  3. Suitable accommodation, certified by the municipality of residence
  4. Health insurance, only for parents over sixty-five

The One-Stop Shop checks the documentation and, if all the requirements are met, issues the clearance within 90 days.

2. Issuing of Entry Visa

After obtaining the authorization, the family member must submit a visa application to the Italian Consulate or Embassy in their country of origin, providing:

  • No objection issued by the Prefecture
  • Documents certifying the relationship (birth certificates, marriage certificates, etc.), translated and legalized
  • Medical certificate (for dependent children with disabilities or non-self-sufficient parents)

If the documentation is in order, the visa is issued within a few days.


What to Do After Entering Italy?

Once the visa has been obtained and they arrive in Italy, the reunited family members must:

  1. Within 8 working days: go to the Immigration One-Stop Shop to request the Electronic residence permit (PSE), by sending the appropriate postal kit
  2. Carry out photo-signalling at the Police Headquarters
  3. Sign the Integration Agreement and participate in training sessions on life in Italy
  4. Register with the Registry Office of the Municipality of residence, mandatory by 20 days
  5. Obtaining the health card at the competent ASL

Validity and Renewal of the Residence Permit for Family Reasons

The residence permit for family reasons has the same duration as that of the family member who requested the reunification and must be renewed upon expiration.
