This type of guarantee is particularly required in the case of tourist visas for citizens of some non-EU countries, including Colombia, to mitigate the risk of irregular immigration or overstays allowed by the visa.

The bank guarantee assures the Italian State that the visitor will not become a burden on public finances during his stay. The practice requires that the institution or person inviting (in your case, to invite a friend from Colombia) contact a bank to issue a guarantee covering the estimated amount necessary for the visitor's stay.

The amount requested may vary based on the length of the stay and other factors established by the Italian authorities, in our case we ensure the maximum amount provided by the legislation which is equal to 3.905,00 euros, for a duration of 180 days, 6 months, even if the tourist visa has a maximum duration of 90 days.

If you are unable to provide such financial security, the invitation may not be sufficient to guarantee the issuance of a tourist visa, as the consular authorities will need to be sure that the visitor has access to adequate financial resources for the duration of his/her stay in Italy.

Can my friend from Colombia get a residence permit when he arrives in Italy?

The residence permit is a document that allows non-EU citizens to stay in Italy for periods longer than 90 days. However, to obtain the residence permit, the foreign citizen must have a valid reason, such as work, study, family reasons, or international protection. Tourist visas,  they do not allow conversion into a residence permit once arrived in Italy, as they are intended for short-term stays and for tourism or visiting purposes.

If your friend from Colombia comes to Italy with a tourist visa, will not obtain a residence permit on the basis of that visa alone.

To change your legal status in Italy and obtain a residence permit, you should have a valid reason such as those mentioned above and follow the appropriate procedures, which often include leaving Italy and applying for a type of visa appropriate to the reason for your stay at the Italian embassy or consulate in Colombia.

If your friend is planning to stay in Italy for a longer period of time for reasons other than tourism, he or she should find out about the types of visas that are suitable for his or her purpose of stay before leaving Colombia.

This process includes collecting the necessary documents and submitting the visa application through the Italian embassy or consulate in his country.

What documents should I send to my friend that I want to invite to Italy?

To invite your friend from Colombia to visit Italy with an invitation, you will have to prepare and send him a series of documents that he will have to bring with him, which can be requested at the Italian border:

Here is a list of documents generally required:

  • Invitation letter: A letter stating that you are inviting your friend to Italy, specifying the period of the visit, the address where he/she will be staying, and your commitment to take care of his/her livelihood and any medical or repatriation expenses. This letter should be signed by you and, depending on the case, may need to be notarized by a notary in Italy.
  • Bank or insurance guarantee: As mentioned above, a guarantee that covers the visitor's living expenses for the duration of the visit, including any repatriation costs and medical expenses.
  • Identity document or passport: A copy of your identity document (if you are an Italian citizen) or your residence permit (if you are a non-Italian citizen residing in Italy).
  • Reddit proof: Documentation that proves your ability to pay the visitor's expenses, such as recent pay stubs, bank statements, or tax returns.
  • Accommodation: Proof of where your friend will be staying during their visit, which can be a statement that you offer hospitality at your home or a hotel reservation.

Health insurance: for an amount of at least 30.000 euros in the event of injury during the period of stay in Italy.

Your friend, for his part, will have to present to the embassy or consulate:

  • Visa Application Form: It must be filled out in all its parts and signed.
  • Passport: It must be valid for at least three months beyond the expected return date and must contain at least two blank pages.
  • Passport size photo: Generally, two recent photos, in color and on a white background, are required.
  • Round trip flight tickets: To demonstrate intentions to return to Colombia.
  • Travel medical insurance: An insurance policy that covers any medical expenses and repatriation for health reasons for the entire duration of the stay in Italy.
  • Proof of economic means: Documents that prove that you have sufficient financial resources for the duration of your stay, such as bank statements, a letter of sponsorship, or the bank/insurance guarantee you have prepared.

It is important to always check with the Italian embassy or consulate in Colombia to obtain the updated list of required documents, as requirements may vary.

Health insurance for my friend that I invite to Italy from Colombia, how long should it last, what amount should it guarantee?

Health insurance for tourist visa It is a fundamental requirement for those who want to visit Italy and must cover the entire period of their planned stay in the country. For your friend who is coming from Colombia, the insurance must meet specific criteria established by the Schengen Area, including:

  • Duration of insurance: The insurance must cover the entire period of the planned stay in Italy. It is important that the policy is valid from arrival to departure, covering the entire duration of the visa requested.
  • Minimum guaranteed amount: The insurance coverage must be at least 30.000 euros (or the equivalent in another currency). This amount is considered sufficient to cover any medical expenses, including emergency ones and repatriation for medical reasons.
  • Territorial coverage: The insurance must be valid in all Schengen Area countries, not just Italy. This is especially important if your friend plans to visit other European countries during his stay.
