Do you need a visa to enter Italy?

The first thing to understand is this: It depends on the country of origin and the how long the person wants to stay.

  1. Citizens who require a visa (e.g. Morocco):
    • If your guest is from a visa-required country (such as Morocco), MUST Request it from the Italian Embassy or Consulate before leaving, even for just one day. The Letter of Invitation is one of the most important documents required to obtain this visa.
  2. Citizens who do NOT need a Visa (e.g. USA, Brazil, Peru):
    • If your guest is coming from an exempt country (for trips up to 90 days), Must NOT apply for a visa. However, you must still have the Invitation Letter ready to show it to the Border Authorities (at the airport) to prove that you have a place to stay.

Important: If the guest wants to stay more than 90 days (3 months), or comes to study or work (not for tourism), a visa is always mandatory for everyone.

What is the Letter of Invitation (or Accommodation Declaration)?

La Invitation Letter (also called Accommodation Declaration o Invitation Card—they are the same thing!) is a document that tu You, who are resident in Italy, officially declare that you wish to host the foreigner (like Hassan) for a specific period of time.

What is it for? Simple:

  • For the Visa (if required): It is a fundamental document to be presented to theItalian embassy of your guest's country to obtain the Visa.
  • For Entrance: If the visa is not needed, it is used to demonstrate to Border Authority (at the airport) that your guest has safe accommodations and that travel is not an excuse to stay.
