Which countries don't require a visa for Italy?

Not all foreigners need to apply for a visa To come to Italy. European Union citizens travel freely, as do citizens of many non-EU countries that have special agreements with Italy. Entry is free for short stays (tourism, business, missions) of up to 90 days.

WHO CAN ENTER WITHOUT A VISA (SCHENGEN AREA)

1. Citizens of the European Union

Citizens of EU countries can travel freely from one country to another without requiring a visa.

2. Schengen Area countries

Italy is part of the Schengen area. This means that citizens of the 22 EU countries that are part of it, plus the 4 associated countries, can circulate freely. The 4 associated countries are:

  • Iceland
  • Liechtenstein

LIST OF NON-EU COUNTRIES EXEMPT FROM VISA

Visa exemption for these countries is only valid for stays up to 90 days (within a 180-day period) and for the following reasons:

For some of the countries listed above, visa-free entry is valid required if the traveler has a passport with specific characteristics.

1. Biometric Passport Requirement

Visa exemption applies only to holders of biometric passports for citizens of:

  • Albania
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Northern Macedonia
  • Moldova
  • Montenegro
  • Serbia
  • Ukraine.

2. Exceptions for Serbia

Attention: Serbian citizens who have a passport issued by the “Serbian Coordination Directorate” (Koordinaciona uprava) are excluded from the exemption. They must apply for a visa.

3. Taiwan Rule

For Taiwan citizens, visa exemption is only valid if their passport includes the identity card number.

4. Situation in Russia and Ukraine

Following the invasion of Ukraine, visa facilitations for citizens of the Russian Federation have been suspended since September 2022, and Russian passports issued in the occupied regions are not recognized.

AIRPORT TRANSIT: WHEN YOU DON'T NEED A VISA

There is also the Airport Transit Visa (Type A), which is only used for stopovers without leaving the airport. It is usually required for citizens of countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, etc.

However, citizens of these countries are also exempt from transit visa he:

  • They already have a valid visa or residence permit for an EU or Schengen country.
  • They have a valid residence permit for Canada, Japan, San Marino or United States which guarantees the return.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU DON'T NEED A VISA?

Even if you don't need a visa, entry isn't 100% automatic. At the border (at the airport), the police can still check that you have all the necessary paperwork.

What you need to have with you:

  1. Valid passport (or equivalent document).
  2. Justification for travel: You must be able to explain why you are coming to Italy (tourism, business, invitation).
  3. Economic means: You have to prove that have money to support yourself during the trip and to get back home.
  4. Accommodation: Know where you will be sleeping (hotel or invitation letter).
