In very simple terms, it is a document in which you, the &#8220;sponsor&#8221;, declare to the Embassy or Consulate: <em>&#8220;This person is coming to Italy, they will stay at my home and I vouch for them&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not just a piece of paper. The invitation letter constitutes a <strong>declaration of hospitality<\/strong> that replaces a hotel reservation. When a tourist travels, they must prove where they will stay. If they go to a hotel, the reservation is enough. If they come to your home, the invitation letter is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who can make it<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone can sign this document. To make a valid invitation for a visa application, you must be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An <strong>Italian citizen<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A <strong>foreign national lawfully residing<\/strong> in Italy (i.e. with a valid residence permit).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who it is made for<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is made for non-EU citizens (who live outside the EU) who want to enter Italy for a limited period, usually <strong>for tourism<\/strong> or to visit family and friends. In the case of private hospitality<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your guest does not intend to spend money on a hotel and you have a home (owned or rented) where you can host them, the letter serves to formalise this arrangement. It is the legal alternative to the classic tourist reservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. For the Tourist Visa application<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a person living in a non-Schengen country has to apply for a visa for Italy, the Embassy wants concrete proof. The invitation letter is one of the &#8220;key&#8221; documents for obtaining the Uniform Schengen Visa (USV). It serves to prove the purpose of the trip and the conditions of the stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. When the hotel reservation is not enough<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, for long stays (up to 90 days), a hotel reservation may seem too expensive or not very credible in the eyes of those reviewing the visas. PROVIDES<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we move into the field of rules, but I will explain them in a way that even a young person could understand. Italian law (in particular the Consolidated Immigration Act) is very clear: you do not enter Italy without guarantees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Obligations of the inviter (the person who invites)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you sign an <strong>invitation letter for foreign nationals<\/strong>, you take on specific responsibilities. You are not just offering a bed. You undertake to guarantee:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Board and Accommodation:<\/strong> You must ensure that the person will have food and a safe place to sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medical Treatment:<\/strong> You must guarantee that, in the event of illness, there is coverage (often through insurance).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Return to the Home Country:<\/strong> You undertake to ensure that the guest returns to their country before the visa expires.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Civil and Criminal Liability<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be careful: by signing, you take on civil and criminal liability. If you make a false declaration, or if your guest stays in Italy illegally and becomes a burden on the State, you could run into trouble. The law provides that Italy allows entry only to those who can prove they have suitable conditions for their stay. You are the guarantor of those conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Declaration of Hospitality (the 48-hour rule)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a rule that many forget. When your guest physically arrives at your home, the law (the anti-terrorism law) provides for an immediate obligation. <strong>Within 48 hours of the guest&#8217;s arrival<\/strong>, you must make the &#8220;Declaration of Hospitality&#8221; to the Local Police or at the police headquarters (Questura).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>If they stay in a Hotel:<\/strong> The hotel takes care of it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>If they come to your home:<\/strong> You have to do it. If you don&#8217;t, you risk hefty fines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE INVITATION LETTER AND THE BANK GUARANTEE<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is often great confusion: <em>&#8220;Is the letter enough, or do I also need the bank guarantee?&#8221;<\/em>. Let&#8217;s clear this up once and for all. They are two different but complementary things, and both are often needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the Invitation Letter covers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter covers the <strong>&#8220;WHERE&#8221;<\/strong>. It proves that the person has a roof over their head. It guarantees accommodation and the intention to host. It is a declaration of personal and logistical availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What the Bank or Insurance Guarantee covers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guarantee covers the <strong>&#8220;WITH WHAT&#8221;<\/strong>. It serves to guarantee to the State that the foreign national has the money needed to live in Italy without requesting public assistance. The law sets daily amounts (for example, about 45 euros per day per person for short trips, or fixed amounts for long trips) that the foreign national must possess. If the foreign national does not have this money in their bank account, you (the sponsor) can take out a <strong>guarantee for an invitation<\/strong>. It is a financial guarantee entered into with a bank or an insurer that says: <em>&#8220;If they do not have money, this sum is frozen or guaranteed for them&#8221;<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why are both often required?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because to obtain the tourist visa, two distinct requirements must be met:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Having a place to stay (the Letter).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Having the means of subsistence (the Guarantee).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your guest is not wealthy or cannot move capital, the <strong>guarantee for a tourist visa<\/strong> becomes the only way to prove that they will not go hungry and that they will be able to pay for their return trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO MAKE AN INVITATION LETTER<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To fill in a valid <strong>invitation letter for foreign nationals<\/strong> and avoid having it thrown out by the Consulate, you need to prepare a precise set of documents. It is not enough to fill in the form. Here is the shopping list based on current regulations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. The Correct Form<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not download the first form you find on Google Images. You must use the template required by the relevant Embassy or Consulate, or up-to-date templates provided by specialised agencies. The form must contain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The inviter&#8217;s full details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The guest&#8217;s full details.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The reason for the stay (Tourism).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The exact duration (from&#8230; to&#8230;).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The exact address of the accommodation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The family or friendship relationship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. The inviter&#8217;s identity document<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must attach a photocopy of your document:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ID card (if you are Italian).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passport and Residence permit (if you are a foreign national residing in Italy).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Proof of Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You must prove that the home exists and is yours (or that you live there lawfully).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A copy of the deed of ownership (purchase deed).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or a copy of the registered tenancy agreement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Health Insurance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is essential. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vistoperitalia.it\/en\/?page_id=11515\"><strong>A policy with minimum coverage of 30,000 Euros is required<\/strong><\/a> for urgent hospital admission expenses and repatriation expenses.
