First of all, you need to understand whether the foreign citizen you want to invite to Italy needs a visa or not. To find out for certain, the Italian Government has set up a website where you can check with certainty whether they need a visa and which documents are required to apply for it. You simply enter the nationality and the reason for the stay, and the website tells you whether they need a visa to enter Italy and which documents are required to apply for it.

What do I have to do to bring a Moroccan citizen to Italy for tourism?

Who issues the Visa?

Once you have understood, through the website of the Farnesina (the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs), that a visa for Italy is also required for the Moroccan citizen, you should know that the visa is issued by the Italian Embassy or Consulate in Morocco. You are not the one who has to go and apply for the visa for them at an office in Italy.

Rather, it is the foreign citizen who intends to apply for an entry visa for tourism in Italy who must submit to the Italian Embassy in their country of residence an invitation letter from a citizen residing in Italy.

So you must send to your friend in Morocco an invitation letter and two other documents required to apply for the visa at the Embassy in Morocco.

What is the invitation letter? What is it for?

The invitation letter serves to prove to the Italian Embassy where the visa is requested that, when your Moroccan friend arrives in Italy, they will be hosted by you at your home or in a hotel, but always at your expense.

Where do I find the invitation letter to fill in?

It’s simple: you can find it on the Italian Government website. You must fill it in, sign it, attach a valid identity document and send it to your friend, who will take it to the Italian Embassy in Rabat to apply for the tourist visa for Italy.

What are the documents required to apply for the Visa in Morocco?

 Documents and forms that your friend must bring to the appointment at the Italian Embassy in Morocco to apply for the visa:

• the entry visa application form  ( view )
• a recent passport-size photograph 
• a valid travel document with an expiry date at least three months later than that of the requested visa 
• a return travel ticket (a booking is sufficient)
• proof of possession of financial means of subsistence, in the amount provided for by the Directive of the Ministry of the Interior of 1 March 2000 

To prove the requirement of possessing financial means of subsistence in Italy on the invitation of an Italian citizen, you can send your friend the Bank Guarantee for a tourist invitation.

• supporting documentation of one’s socio-professional status

(please note: the tourist visa is not issued to all foreign citizens; it is often refused because the applicant’s economic and socio-professional situation in their country of origin is considered inadequate and suggests that the purpose is not to travel to Italy for tourism but to emigrate. As this is prohibited by law, it is a ground for refusing the visa. If a tourist visa is requested, it must be solely for tourism; otherwise there are other types of visa to apply for.) 

• health insurance with a minimum coverage of €30,000 for emergency hospitalisation expenses and repatriation costs, valid in Italy and throughout the Schengen area. 
• declaration of hospitality. (the one you have to send them, filled in and signed.)

To summarise:

So that your friend can apply for the visa, you must send to your friend in Morocco:

1. the Declaration of Hospitality form, filled in and signed, with an identity document
2. the Bank Guarantee to ensure that in Italy they will have the means of subsistence needed for the entire stay
3. Health insurance with a ceiling of €30,000.00 to guarantee payment of medical expenses or hospitalisation for sudden illnesses or accidents that may occur during the stay in Italy. (please note: pre-existing conditions are not covered).
