Understanding the financial means required for your stay in, and return from, Italy and the Schengen Area.
To enter Italy, a foreign national must have sufficient financial means to support themselves during their stay and to return to their country of origin or residence. This availability of financial means is a fundamental requirement for entry into the Schengen Area as provided for by the Visa Code.
The Ministry of the Interior set out the guidelines defining the means of subsistence for the entry and stay of foreign nationals in Italy through a directive dated 1 March 2000.
According to this directive, a foreign national can prove the availability of financial means with cash, bank guarantees, surety bonds, equivalent negotiable instruments, prepaid service vouchers, or proof of available sources of income in Italy.

In addition, unless different rules apply, you are required to prove the availability of accommodation in Italy (for example, through a hotel reservation or a declaration of hospitality).
The availability of sufficient means of subsistence is a fundamental requirement for the issuance of the entry visa and may be verified during police checks at the border, even for those foreign nationals who do not need a visa to enter Italy.
If a foreign national cannot prove the availability of the necessary resources, they are subject to a refusal-of-entry order issued by the border police authorities.
