Regulation EC No. 539/2001, which governs visa policy for European Union countries and the Schengen Area, provides a detailed list of the countries whose nationals require a visa to enter Italy.
These countries are divided into two categories:
- countries subject to a visa requirement;

To obtain a visa for Italy, nationals of countries subject to the visa requirement must submit an application to the Italian embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
A visa application usually requires the completion of a form, the payment of a fee and the submission of a number of documents, such as a valid passport, a recent photograph, a copy of the travel itinerary, a bank guarantee as proof of sufficient financial means to cover expenses during your stay in Italy, and valid health insurance covering the period of your stay.
In addition, applicants are required to prove the purpose of their trip and their intention to leave Italian territory once the visa expires.
This can be demonstrated by providing hotel reservations or return tickets, invitation letters from Italian citizens or legal residents in Italy, or documents attesting participation in specific events, such as conferences or congresses.
It is important to note that the visa application process can take time, so it is advisable to start the procedure well in advance of the intended travel date. It is also essential to complete all forms accurately and submit every required document in order to avoid delays or refusals in the granting of the visa.
There are, however, some exceptions for nationals of certain countries. Under bilateral agreements and commitments entered into by Italy with other States, some countries enjoy visa exemptions for entry into Italian territory. For example, citizens of European Union countries, the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland do not need a visa to enter Italy. Likewise, certain third countries, such as the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan, may benefit from a visa exemption for short-stay tourist visits.
