Do you need a visa for Italy? Are you sure?

If a non-EU citizen wants to come to Italy for tourism, they may stay for a maximum period of 90 days.

To find out for certain whether you need a visa, you can access the Ministry’s database:

Access to the information about the visa requirement for a foreign citizen to enter Italy is possible through the visa database, available on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

By selecting the question “Do you need a visa?” and entering information such as Nationality, Residence, Duration of stay and Purpose of the visa, the foreign individual is able to find out whether they need to obtain a visa to enter Italy.

In addition, they can obtain purely indicative (and non-exhaustive) data on the general requirements for their application. Check whether you need a visa.

Who needs a Visa for Italy?

In many cases you need to obtain a Tourist Visa for Italy in advance, but not all countries need to obtain a visa to enter Italy; for some countries in the world it is enough to have:

  •  the passport,
  • health insurance
  • and proof of means of subsistence for the period spent in Italy (a Bank Guarantee),

which will be requested from you at the border.

Do you want to know in which countries in the world citizens do NOT need to apply for a Visa for Italy for a short stay?

This is the list updated to 2022, but be careful, because thanks to international agreements this list changes often:

Albania, Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Colombia, South Korea, Costa Rica, Dominica, El Salvador, United Arab Emirates, Georgia, Japan, Grenada, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong SAR, Solomon Islands, Israel, Kiribati, Malaysia, Macao SAR, North Macedonia, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Micronesia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, Nauru, Nicaragua, New Zealand, Palau, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Christopher (Saint Kitts) and Nevis, United Kingdom, Samoa, Saint Lucia, Serbia, Seychelles, Singapore, United States, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Taiwan, East Timor, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Ukraine, Uruguay, Vanuatu, Venezuela.

Remember, however, that at the border it is always necessary to prove means of subsistence (a Bank Guarantee) and health insurance for the entire period you stay in Italy.

The best and fastest method is certainly to obtain a Bank Guarantee through a person resident in Italy who invites you for a tourist stay.
