The Visa Information System

A Guide to the Visa Information System (VIS)

The Visa Information System (VIS) is a system that shares information on visas for entry into the Schengen Area, which is an area made up of 27 European countries with no internal borders. This system was created in 1995 to make procedures easier, to better control the external borders and to increase security.

When a person applies for a visa for the first time, they must attend in person at the Italian Embassy or the Italian Consulate in their country of residence and provide a series of details and documents, such as their photograph and fingerprints.

If the person applies for a visa within the next 5 years, they do not have to provide their fingerprints again unless there are doubts about their identity. The authorities responsible for checks at the external borders can verify the visa holder’s identity using the VIS.

Some categories of people are exempt from the requirement to provide fingerprints, such as children under 12, persons who cannot provide them for physical reasons and heads of state or government.

When a person applies for a visa, their personal data such as their photograph, fingerprints and biographical information are recorded in the VIS. This data will be used to make a decision on the visa and will be kept for a maximum of 5 years. This data is protected and can only be used for specific purposes.

The person who applied for the visa can request that their data be deleted or corrected within the VIS, but they must provide a valid justification; to request these changes they must contact the same official to whom they applied for the visa.
